I used to play with hardcore settings on, it wasn't that hard really. I never shot down anything better than an AI mediocre Mischersmit though...
I think it is easier to learn if you just start out on hard settings, but give yourself map icons and on screen icons so you can tell firend from foe and see the distance the enemy is away from you. Out of aircraft views are only ever good for screenshots [
