Sort of, DVDs can hold more data about 6x more then a cd-r. However you can buy blank DVD-R and DVD+R, both are basically the same thing, but some dvd players can only play one or the other, however nowadays most play both.

I reccommend memorex, verbatim, tdk and sony- only because I have never had any duffs with these makes, but any well known brand should do the job.
