If you've not got the output enabled, it will won't be switched to if there are other devices connected.
It has a simple order of precidence, ie input 1 over input 2 and so forth.
Simplest solution would be to keep the DVI output switched off on the macbook until you need it. Most of the 'real' laptop makers put simple software to control the laptop display mode (ie clone, span, off). Thats how i use it on my toshiba tablet pc.
