Assault is assault. You can't put some magical minimum limit of damage onto the crime, as then this limit can simply be abused.
In this case, we had a group of people peacefully going about their hobby/beliefs, when all of a sudden there was a premeditated attack upon them. Nothing had been done to provoke it, and he clearly intended to injure (although the amount intended is debatable) and upset.
It actually puts a whole new perspective on schoolyard 'fun', really, doesn't it?
