That's very similar to an experience I once had on the river Dee - near Chester.
Myself and a couple of mates were trotting for grayling, roach, rudd, perch etc, and... as is the norm... any we caught, we just dropped back in.
I was sitting up the bank - some 10' - 12' or so above the river, so the fish were making a bit of a splash when they hit the water.
This big pike obviously wised up to what was happening, and moved in for the kill... lying in ambush.
I never saw him, until he leaped clean out of the water to grab a roach I'd just thrown down

The bloody fish never even hit the water
We all laughed about it afterwards of course, but I absolutely **** myself at the time - what with the suddenness of it
It's the great outdoors... the challenge on a hard day... all the wildlife... and stories like those, which make fishing the absolute
pleasure it is
Like the little robin who perched on my pole
(oooer missus!), and helped himself to maggots from the pole feeder, before I tipped them all in my swim

And the little bluefinch who kept jumping back in and out my peripheral vision to attract my attention, so I'd throw some maggots, casters, corn, or whatever to it
