Not exactly free... When you register Games/consoles on the Nintendo web-site (using the card packaged with the game/console) you get so many Nintendo Stars. The stars are used to trade for various items ranging from screensavers and wallpapers to T-shirts and full games (always very low stock of those). Nintendo now allows you to trade those Stars for Wii points codes.
