Re: ATI Drivers: stereo 3d????
I would like to reopen this thread if i may as there are numerous developments in the stereo 3D area since 2005 which are important to this argument ...
Now im thinking of buying an ATI card due to the wonderful 48xx series. Ive always despised ATI due to their poor drivers and heat issues but i digress. The loss of 3D stereo is a big thing for me as ive been using it for years now on NVIDIA.
Ill admit that with LCDs becoming the dominant medium, shutter glasses are no longer an option with the low refresh rates. However, head tracking is far superior anyway as it does not require a flickering display and can be run at any resolution. The results are simply stunning anyone who has tried it will agree.
I think a large reason that many people dont use this technology is that they are not aware of it and it has not been commercialised enough. However with recent advents in people using Wiimotes, etc to create very cheap homebrew headtracking, more and more people are becoming aware of it. I predict that in years to come this technology could become the norm for 3D gaming with the right advertising because it vastly improves the experience.
As a software developer i can assure anyone that drivers from 3rd parties is simply not going to cut it. Something like this really needs to hook into the graphics at the lowest level, the actual driver itself, to achieve seamless results. NVIDIA have realised this and to their credit support 3d stereo even through its lowest and most unpopular moments.
ATI PLEAAASE think about supporting head tracking at least - i cant imagine its too hard and i suspect that some clever LINUX developers may even one day implement this if what i hear about making the drivers open source is correct?
If someone from ATI can take note of this and supply a resopnse that would be great
