I was going to say Edinburgh as well but was beaten to it! The Festival/ Fringe hype machine is slowly grinding up through the gears but there's plenty of other things to do in Edinburgh apart from the Fringe. Visit the Castle (recommended), climb Arthur's Seat, walk down Leith Walk to the water front, check on Princes Street Gardens, walk through the New Town (amazing the architecture you see hidden away from sight), sit outside a pub a watch life go by. There's a lot to do for not too much cash.
Sticking with Scotland (cause I don't know England very well!) I'd also recommend Tain especially if you like driving around and seeing beautiful scenery. It's north of Inverness so quite a drive away. If you go remember to check out the Glenmorangie distillery. Surprisingly interesting!
