I have used and supported vista home premium and vista business and literally if it doesnt have 3GB+ Ram, everything crawls.
Hence, my opinion is if its not vista ultimate, you're better off with xp pro (back in the day, it was also recommended xp pro > xp home). Hence, why oem manufacturers have been supplying machines downgraded to xp pro with an optional vista installation disk.
Where's the benefit of XP Pro over XP Home for most home users? It's the same OS, but with domain support and a few other funky bits (remote desktop etc) thrown in. It's no more efficient with resources, and the same is the case for Vista - Ultimate is no more or less efficient than Business or Home Premium.
