It's got nothing to do with Vista...

Got 8GB myself, and it was only because of the ludicrously low prices and Vista's SuperFetch to be honest. It's not needed at all, but it's great to see pretty much every program open from RAM.

If you've a need for 16GB, chances are you'll be wanting ECC for a high-end workstation rather than your average desktop RAM.

Most current boards are advertised as only supporting 8GB, but whether that's true or just them covering untested set ups, I've no idea.
