It shouldn't really, big chains usually have a fairly standard policy. I think it more depends on what you're returning. If you took a kettle back it's easy to swap, a TV however is trickier to swap, unless it's a glaringly obvious scrap job, or known inherent fault. That doesn't seem to be the case here, as the set seems to be working again. If it is I seriously doubt the shop will entertain a swap.
Someone working for said electrical retailer on another forum mentioned that their policy is to inspect every major electrical item, which usually involves returning it to the manufacturer. The reason for that is for testing, and to get approval from the manufacturer as to how to proceed. If the store replaced the TV, but Toshiba then repaired it and sent it back to them, the store would have to take the loss.
