In a word: FUN
Firstly, its £200 for a full setup. Buying instruments would end up at AT LEAST £200 per person.
Now, add in learning to read sheet music, getting people together, learning to use the instruments......many will not find that fun.
Enter rockband, where anyone can play drums, lead guitar, bass guitar or sing within an hour or so. All huddled around the screen, not needing to read sheet music, watching the "rock-o-meter", saving your mate by rocking out to bring him back in after being "boo-ed off", etc etc
Its a right laugh, its easy and fast to pick up and you can actually sound OK after getting plastered (on whatever you choice of poison is)
It rocks
My RB2 is pre-ordered from the states - this is the only game that makes me thankful to have a US console

BTW, anyone seen the
stage kit?

Lighting, strobe and smoke machine lol
Also, not only is the RB hardware compatible with RB2 but they are releasing the symbols as a bolt-on kit for the RB1 drums, plus all RB1 songs are compatible with RB2.
