Tearing my hair out!

Recently water has been leaking into my car boot (1995 Mercedes E300) I've spent a couple of hours trying to solve the problem, mainly sitting in the closed boot clutching a torch while a mate sprays the car with water (note well, have a good mate do this, not one who will leave you in the boot for extended periods, he was warned that the boot of my car will quite happily accommodate his body should he try that again).

I tracked down the culprit and water has been leaking in through here:

I removed the rubber trim panel that sits on the bottom of the windscreen and found that the sealant had perished and in some places was entirely absent. In true manjob style I acquired some silicone and sealed around the whole of the bottom of the windscreen.

However it is still leaking, not as much as it was before, the amount of water is much reduced but it is still getting in somewhere. To start with you only had to exhale wetly on the car for water to pour in, now it only starts to dribble through after about 5 mins of hosepipe spray (gently over the whole back windscreen)

Should I have used a different type of sealant? Have I missed something? I am pretty sure that I have gotten all the gaps filled it, but maybe the sealant hasn't adhered properly somewhere.

Any suggestions very welcome.
