Hi, just want to say a big thank you for an excellent and well put together machine

I've said this before in other posts but the attitude and commitment from you guys at Scan is simply not seen anywhere else. The effects of this is clearly apparent in the quality of the assembly. A few cable ties here and there may seem like nothing but it all goes to show that the attention is there.

I'm running Ubuntu on this machine now and so far so good. I had a few issues getting it going due to the all SATA configuration but it's all good now.

I'll need a few more days to get settled but will follow up with a pic or two of the system in situ.

Thanks again and a big thanks to Philip for your commitment with the research into suitable components.

    Four months on

    Hi guys,

I thought I'd drop you a line about how I'm settling in with my system.

General view: Fantastic. The machine has yet to break out a sweat. It eats anything I throw at it. I can transcode video in minutes that used to take me up to an hour. I run sometimes in excess of ten virtual machines on this box and they're all as good as native. Bloody brilliant. I've managed to ditch lots of old hardware that I've now virtualised.

If I have to have a complaint, it's this: it's bloody HOT. It's so hot I have to open windows (the glass ones, not the microsoft ones ) I reckon in the winter I'll have my heating off! It really is hot - I was very surprised at how hot it is. Everything works fine except that the room gets so hot.

My other complaint, and it's minor, is that it is not as quiet as I'd hoped. It is quiet (a lot quieter than the old dual PIII that it replaced) but it could not be described as silent. It isn't so loud as to be a bother though

Anyway, so I've installed Ubuntu Linux 64 bit. I had a few bumps getting it installed but that's a Linux issue not a fault of the hardware. I've got OpenVZ giving me virtual linux environments for various purposes (media server, subversion repositiory, dns, etc) and I use VirtualBox to run Windows - I have a few XP instances, and one Windows 7 for the hell of it.

I've got X-Plane working nicely under Linux and it's smooth and no effort for the graphics card. I use a yoke and pedals and it all works fine under Linux. This would be my "graphics intensive" application and it works just fine. In fact the machine doesn't even notice it - continuing to serve TV over my LAN at the same time.

I've still got a fair amount of project-work to complete - including migration of my old file server which will mean moving some hard drives over. When that's done I'll have everything on one physical box which is great.

Great system. I guess the next thing to buy is a fridge to put it in
