Without having a manual of your Sony before me, it's hard to say anything much for certain, but one possiblity might be that the you need to go into the Sony's menu and actively select for sound to be routed via the digital output.

Presently, it could be, simply, that the Sony is set up only to output through it's phono audio outputs or Scart socket.

I've just checked this on one of my set-top DVD players, a Yamada 5520, and by default, the digital output IS turned off.

I've looked at another player and here it's turned on permanently but there are two output options - PCM (which is currently not selected) and Bit Stream (which is).

So, possibly, even if the digital output on your Sony is turned on, it might not be outputting the sort of digital that the logitech speakers can handle.

My money's on the digital output being turned off, though.
