| I'd reccomend the H10 - great display, great user interface, bult in radio, great sound quality, supports MP3 and WMA, can sync in windos media player, good battery life..... need any more reasons?

Edit: Sorry I just read what you want it for - the iriver would be great for what you need it for. It can record in various bit rates in MP3, which is great. It may well be, as you say, a bit expensive and over featured for what you want.
