| Next gen consoles versus my TV's inputs Right. Next-gen consoles are promising high definition images, which is great. The problem, though, is how best to plug these things in - I'm already using most of the connections on my TV:
RGB-SCART: GameCube
SCART: DVD player
VGA: MythTV HTPC
HDMI: free
Component: PS2
SVideo: XBox
Composite: free
There are more things than that though, who have to share assorted plugs. The NES shares a video cable with the Megadrive, which both use one of the old RF adapters. The SNES and N64 are connected via composite, into a SCART adapter, into the DVD player. The Dreamcast connects via VGA, which involves cable swapping with the HTPC.
Either way, as you can see, I've got lots o' inputs, which are all pretty saturated.
So, what're my options for future connections?
The XBox 360 is meant to have either component or VGA for its HD output (which potentially means more cable swapping), with a question mark over the other two systems.
Should I look at a KVM? Problem there is they don't include speaker switching, just video (and ps/2). A component switch? I've seen one relatively cheaply, but I'm not sure whether to trust garishly packaged chinese goods, and a non-cheap one suddenly enters the very expensive realm of AV receivers (which are still pretty light on inputs i want).
Suggestions? KVM? Cable swapping? Component switch? What I'd *like* is a non-cheap-and-plasticky component switch with more than 3 inputs, for some future expandability. |
