we were using a EZ COOL 400w POS that came with the case. It only has a 20 pin header for the motherboard which is expecting a 24 pin. I was told this was fine but I tried my nice Akasa PaxPower 460w with the 24 pin connector and got the same problems.

this machine (currently) has only 1 Maxtor 80Gb and a DVD ROM besides the motherboard connections. My akasa PSU powers my rig below so from that I think we can safely rule out power since it's the same on the cheap PSU. Still going to replace that if possible for fear of it frying something....
