How to run 3 monitors on a HD 6850

    Afternoon peeps

How easy is it to setup a 3 screen setup for gaming on a HD6850.

Now that i have a card that can do it, it it simple to setup and how well does it perform.

Will games need to run on lower setting to keep the frame rates up.
Will all monitors need to be the same size ( i have 2 the same and can get a 3rd if i borrow my daughters TV)

    Cheers

I think you will struggle running games with 3 monitors with that card mate.

One monitor will have to use display port which can be troublesome at times. All screens will have to run the same resolution and unless one of the monitors/tv has displayport you will need an active displayport adapter which aren't all that cheap..

Some games will be fine across three displays, some might require more horsepower or dropping the settings a bit.

Different monitor sizes are no problem. Different resolution is slightly more problematic, but it's not a barrier - for extended desktop mode it's fine. For single display over multi monitors (full screen gaming) the software will drop all the monitors to the highest common resolution.

I would expect to drop the settings slightly to keep it all running smooth.

Would have all monitors the same brand , size and resolution.

I have saw on you tube people running 2 monitors. Might give that a try tonight and see how it works.

Heard of displayport but no idea what or how it work. Could the hdmi on my card run the 3rd screen.

Sent from somewhere other than my PC.

No, you will need the display port to run the third screen.

    ok.

if i got a displayport to dvi adaptor, will this work for the 3rd screen, or would i need an displayport capable monitor or active displayport.

sorry about the noob questions but have no idea about them.

Here's a nice tutorial from Sapphire:
    youtube.com/watch?v=aYorUpN4PQo

Ive also seen video's that suggest that it's possible to use a passive DisplayPort to VGA adapter (which is cheaper that an active alternative) to for the 3rd screen. But I dont have any experience of this myself. (video's on youtube)

    Ok.

I managed to 'borrow' a display port adaptor from work and tried to run 2 monitors.

I setup 1 on the adaptor and one on the DVI port. When I tried it, I got 1 screen working ( the one on the DVI ) and the one on the displayport adaptor flashed for a second then went off.

The computer detects both screens and I am able to set it up as a display port group, but nothing shows on the display port monitor.

I think that the adaptor is a passive one but I would expect to get at least 2 monitors running.

    Can anyone please advise.

    Cheers.

Re: How to run 3 monitors on a HD 6850

As has already been mentioned, you need an active adaptor if you're using display port. If you're connecting two displays then you just connect one display to each DVI connector.

I understand that I would need an active adaptor to get 3 screens working however the displayport adaptor that I borrowed from work was used to run a dvi monitor with no issues and now it doesn't work.

Is my card needing a setting tweaked or something.

I am under the impression from reading other threads on the subject that I can run 2 monitors in display port essentially running a game on 2 screens. Ok its not ideal but I would like to try, and I would need an active display port adaptor to run 3 monitors.

    Am I right or not?

Re: How to run 3 monitors on a HD 6850

You can run two monitors if you connect them both to the DVI connectors. The reason you can't run more than two is because you only have two DVI connectors on the back of the card. You can use a (passive) DVI to display port adaptor on one of those connectors if you want to attach a 2nd display that is display port, but you're trying to go from Display port to DVI? Just connect both DVI monitors to both DVI connectors!
