The hub? I saw you mention it before....

Edit: just googled it. Looks as if it could be quite good, next step up from a notification centre.

If you don't like the interface you could always download a different launcher from the Google Play Store.

I could, just a pity Google didn't get it quite right, but I really don't want to faff about with it, it's only a phone at the end of the day! I've faffed around enough with it. If my time was chargeable, it would have been cheaper to be an iPhone at the outset! . But having got it to an acceptable state, and got used to the GUI, I'll stick with it.

But it is reading my iCloud data, and WhatsApp is an OK substitute for iMessaging.

    Re: New phone

Well, I thought all was well, but the email app is pretty rubbish.

It doesn't support md5 challenge response authentication for outgoing mail, (well documented, why doesn't Google fix it?) it doesn't let me search deleted or sent mail folders, and it doesn't allow moving a deleted mail back to the inbox.

E mail is pretty fundamental, you'd think it would be quite good by now.

It feels like something cobbled together in the 1990s.

    Re: New phone

On my email, if I read a deleted mail there is a little grey box near the top right that says "Deleted". If I click that is asks "Move to" and I can select a folder. I just moved an email from deleted to inbox and then deleted it again.

That is to an IMAP server.

    Re: New phone

Yes, works on IMAP, but not on POP3. No search facility on POP3 mailboxes either.

And I can't send to my IMAP server because of the md5 challenge/response issue.

    Re: New phone

I recommend a Moto E, straight from motorola, or a Moto G. They will be unlocked.

    Re: New phone

Sorted out the mail sending problem by degrading the security settings on the server. Not at all impressed with the Android mail client. What is really annoying is that the lack of security is a known issue and has been for a while, but still not fixed!

    Re: New phone

Just got an upgrade to lollipop 5.1 on my moto g so might be able to answer questions more accurately.

That is, once I get past the initial re-learning point like this morning sat in a meeting thinking "How the **** do I silence this thing" because that is now on the volume rocker not the power button

lol, thanks. Think I have the measure of it now pretty much, though for my benefit an convenience (sigh) it seems to have dropped my imap email settings as part of the upgrade. Not been bothered enough to re-enter my imap and smtp details, perhaps I will break out the usb otg adapter and a usb keyboard as it is all a bit fiddly on screen.

My audio streaming over bluetooth seems improved, as it battery life and apps seem snappier (despite me enabling ART in 4.4 so I didn't expect any difference).

I still hate the triangle, circle, square soft buttons. Have had several people now trying to convince me that they are elegant, so I just try and convince them that those symbols are meaningless

Overall it does feel like an upgrade, now that I found the option to make chrome only take one page in the task browser rather than spamming it with what feels like every single page I have ever visited.

In the middle of a meeting, I don't really want to be touching the volume rocker in case it changes volume and does a friendly "beep" to show me how loud it now is Have used home page widgets in the past.

Does anyone know why the calendar icon continually shows the date as the 31st instead of the current date?
