New Phone Needed - What Options

So thanks London, I now need to replace my OnePlus One - what oiks steal phones nowadays when they can be blocked within an hour . I thoguht the phone was excellent and actually can't imagine going back to a smaller phone now, althoguh the trusty N4 is coming out of the dusty draw. I haven't kept up with what is around - did get an invite for the Two, but that expired. Is this better than the One, or should I just pick up a new One for £220. Is there any other startup competing with OnePlus for a good price and top spec phone. Budget is around £300 and I think I will stick with Android. Thanks

Yep, I went with the Moto X Style(at £360) but the play is a great phone if you don't want to go that high.
Seems to me that too many compromises went into the Nexus 5X in order to cram in that fingerprint sensor.

    Anything but a Galaxy S6!

With that budget or just a bit more probably a Moto X Style, LG G4, Nexus 5X or One+2.

If it's an Android phone, Motorola G second gen offers a lot of bang per Buck. Why pay more?

If budget end - Wileyfox / Moto G

If prepared to go 2nd hand route then any 2014 flagship. Google Nexus 6, HTC M8, Xperia Z3, LG G3 or a Note 3.

Re: New Phone Needed - What Options

I guess you need a replacement immediately? The Nexus 5X is £339 and looks quite nice, but is only pre-orders and not shipping.

I actually got a Moto X Play two weeks ago to replace my old Moto G 4G and I'm very happy with it, but if deciding today I might go for the Nexus 5X due to the slightly smaller screen and USB-C. But there'll always be a newer model in a few weeks ...

Particularly if you have rooted your phone, although it is possible to change the IMEI on an Android (not sure about IOS) without rooting it.

I should point out that in the UK changing the IMEI number is illegal and not the only way a phone may be identified.

Don't suppose you had Android Device Manager set up to locate the phone? Probably a bit late by now as the battery may have ran out even if it hadn't been factory-reset.

If you haven't already, definitely let your network and the police know about both the phone and SIM. Amongst other reasons, you want to alert the operator to the stolen SIM to avoid the scam where the thief uses it to call their own premium-rate numbers to turn a profit (which is why it's good to have a SIM PIN, though I think networks are usually sympathetic anyway if you let them know ASAP).

True, networks can add IMEI numbers to a blacklist to refuse them access but even if the number is changed the phones can still be located. It's just a case of someone putting the effort in. Hardware-backed device locking (e.g. Qualcomm Safeswitch) can't come soon enough to mobile devices, and it seems silly its only just starting to emerge. SIMs are a piece of cake for networks to disable on the other hand.

My main gripe is awful battery life, daily use for me without charging is less than 6 hours, my Z3 is about 20 hours!

Then there is Samsung TouchWiz which is a laggy abomination. If I put Nova Launcher on it its much better but still lags.

Then there is the memory management/leak issue which means the phone has to be rebooted every couple of days or it slows down massively.

Then there is the rom bugginess which means I'll get random lockups & force closes.

Then there is the phones design which means the back is so slippy its literally flew out of my hand on more than one occasion.

    Then there is no waterproofing.

Then there is no removable battery.

Then there is no SD card slot.

Then there is.....you get my point

Thank God work paid for it!

Re: New Phone Needed - What Options

    That's quite a list

Is there anything that is waterproof and has a removable battery?

Genuine question, that seems hard to do and I would be most impressed. Have just upgraded to a Sony M4 Aqua, and the waterproofing means there are little plugs all over the place and it is quite sealed up. My daughter's splash resistant Moto E is similarly slab like without the usual Moto removable back.

Yes it's called the Samsung Galaxy S5 !!!!! The latest Sony phone dont have covers on the charging ports now, only the Sim card/Sd card slot, although they're now not claiming they're waterproof anthough they still retain their IP rating. (too many returns/claims)

Re: New Phone Needed - What Options

The S6 active looks pretty interesting - it has a fairly rugged case, much larger battery, water-resistance (I think).

Sadly it's not available in the UK and seems quite expensive. It's a shame because those things are amongst what I'd want in my ideal phone.

Re: New Phone Needed - What Options

If £300 is your limit, I'd recommend the Moto X Play. It's £279 for the 16gb model, or £40 extra for 32Gb.

I was going to recommend the 2014 Moto X, it's still a decent phone, but they did have it at £240, now it's £395. Which seems a bit steep for last year's phone.
