    O2 and IPhone 3G...here yet?

A while back I was sent a couple service messages from O2 saying that I can sign up to be informed when the 3G goes live. I also entered some data including my account number on the O2 site.

About a week back got another one saying that 'demand will be high, so purchase fast' etc...but since then...nada

Launch day is this Friday so I wonder if O2 have any plans for current IPhone/contract customers to place their orders?

    Thanks!

As an aside, but on a related note, when they are released is the purchase/activation process the same, and as such, is it still possible to jailbreak them?
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

Re: O2 and IPhone 3G...here yet?

D'oh! Can't believe I missed it as O2 had sent a sms at ~7:45am saying that early registrations were active today. However, this is what they say now:

    Upgrade to iPhone 3G
Find out more about iPhone 3G - Only on O2

Due to high demand for iPhone 3G, we're currently out of stock online. Come back on 10th July for more information.
Oh well! Jailbreak: possible I guess?

I think the activation process is going to be different.

This is still a little fuzzy. Here's the deal: with the first iPhone, Apple used to let you buy it in the store and take it home to activate. This process is unlike almost every other phone on the market, but since it's Apple, and because you were paying full price for the device, if you never activated it with AT&T or just unlocked it and sent it to your friend in China or whatever, it wasn't a big deal. Apple made their money on the device, and AT&T didn't lose anything.

But since now AT&T is basically picking up a huge portion of the cost of your iPhone 3G, they want to make damn sure you aren't going to unlock it or send it to a friend. From what we've heard, you'll likely have to start the activation process in-store (so Apple and AT&T knows exactly who's buying the device), and then you might be able to finish it off at home. It's definitely not ideal, but it's the only way they can prevent people from basically walking away with a few hundred dollars of AT&T's money. And at the end of the day, it probably won't be WORSE than buying any other kind of phone though -- anyone who's bought a phone from a US carrier in the last 10 years will be well acquainted with the process.

I don't know what O2 are doing though.

Re: O2 and IPhone 3G...here yet?

Erm...this is what it says on the carphonewarehouse site:

"Pre-orders will be delivered on the 11th July. Orders will be sent to your chosen delivery address, either a store or the address at which you were credit checked. You will be required to provide your credit or debit card with chip and pin used to place your order for collection in store. Any required payment for the device must be paid upfront at the point of pre-order. iPhone is restricted to use on the O2 network. Attempting to use it on any other network, for example by replacing the SIM card, may mean it becomes permanently unusable. 8GB and 16GB available. One per customer. Subject to availability and network coverage. Connection subject to status minimum of 18 years of age, 18 month minimum contract from £30 per month, credit check required. Requires a valid credit or debit card. The price of the device is dependant on the tariff chosen (free from £45 a month). Activation of the device requires the latest version of iTunes, a broadband connection and a minimum level of PC or Mac software. Apple, the Apple logo, iPod, iTunes and Mac are trademarks of Apple Inc., registered in the US and other countries. IPhone and Multi-Touch are trademarks of Apple Inc."
Looks like it'll be the same as before, for the UK at least...

Wait for the PAYG version to appear nearer to christmas ?

I find the price shocking really for a phone which is a jack of all trades and a master of none and missing some really important features such as MMS ( yes... third party apps make this work )

If Apple got off their High-horse, said stuff it, drop the price a little and make it accessable to the masses then I reckon it would be as popular as the Nokia N95

Re: O2 and IPhone 3G...here yet?

I think it's a great device - not perfect but pretty good and improving.

The UI is something which appeals the most - esp when you compare this with Windows Mobile when it first came out (or was indeed 12 months old)

The MMS thing is a pain - and I am confused why they simply haven't fixed.

Just upped my Touch to 2.0, pretty good. Mainly wanting to try the Exchange interaction, and that works well enough.

I do hope that they finally fit the next iPhone with a better camera, and enable MMS.
