iphone 3gs dorked - help suggestions?

Hi all,

My iphone seemed to pack it in last night.

The issue is the connector at the base seems to be knackered - it refuses to charge from either PC or wall unit and the PC cannot see it. I've tried with three different leads.

Any suggestions?

It was absolutely fine, this happened without warning and I can honestly say that since I unplugged it to head to the shops, drove there and back and when I got back to charge it for the night - kaput.

It has had a relatively...enthusiastic life with me, but this is a bit sudden.

Connectors go when used a lot, I would suggest dropping it into a Genius and see what they say and how much it would be if it needs repair. You have tried different leads (and I am assuming those leads work with other Apple devices fine?) and thats about the best you can do. So either get a repair (warranty still?) or iPhone 4? When is your upgrade due?

u may need to replace this part http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/iPhone-3GS-Rep...item43a7a9d949, if the phone was dropped it could be the connector on the above part (left handside)that has become disconnected

Leads are fine with everywhere else, not sure there's one of those near me. Will need to check.

Warranty gone, contract has another 9 months to run >.<


I tempted to get it to a shop, get it repaired enough to get the data off it and then claim on the insurance it's got tbh.

As much as I'm not a fan of Apple devices in general, the Apple stores are very good in my experience when it comes to customer service. Even if they quote you a silly amount, you're free to walk away and thank them for their time.

Apparently I'm informed that the backup process will do contacts too and it is a simple matter of "restoring" to a new handset. Maybe time to ring the insurers, see if that free insurance is worth what I paid for it

Nearest apple store is 50-odd miles away :/

If you got it on a contract then the place you got it from (Carphone warehouse etc) will repair it for free if its a fault and not something you done.

That is unless you got a sim only deal . . . .

Its a vodafone contract. I assumed they would not as they tried to flog me insurance at the time?

Nope the phone is part of the contract. If it breaks during the contract they must fix it. Like i said if its a fault of the phone and not you then they will do it.

Thats why I never got insurance. It was only good if you lost the phone, dropped it down the toilet or had it stole (and even then it was sometimes no good). But for faults with the phone itself during the contract they will fix it for free.

That is unless they have changed in the past year. My advice would be to go to your local vodafone shop. Back up your phone before going and expect to be without it for about 2 weeks.

Aw sweet. Too late to backup - other than the default one and it was hours synced before failing.

I got shot of the insurance too since I get free stuff with my current account.

I'll give them a bell tonight


I've stuffed the sim in the work mobi for the time being after diverting calls so I'll live for now (for emergencies).

Went for insurance in the end, as mentioned above, the phone has led an enthusiastic/adventurous life and whilst it didn't break after being dropped or similar this time, it had been dropped a fair few times before so figured insurance was liable to be the cheapest option

Insurance all sorted out.

Posting mainly to say backup did work as promised. Plug in new phone, instant option to restore from backup, all data restored.

All data to the point of actually being quite creepy - it even remembered the open web pages.

The only thing dropped was email passwords.
