    PSU's

You guys *really* need a larger range of PSU's.
Im not even going to start my Q-tec digging here either ;)

Hiper are quality, but we need more to choose from !
Also it appears that the hiper website is down and a lot of stockiests of these PSUs are no longer supplying them - have they gone out of business ?

I've heard a lot of bad coments about the Q-Tec PSU's. Are they really that bad ? I read a suggestion on a message board recently that the 550W Q-Tec is quite a good one and that the previous ones let the brand down.

Is it possible that the 550W Q-Tec is any good and that they've just got a bad name due to some dodgy products they made in the past ?

Also, are they just 'bad' because they are not good when put under strain - ie: in overclocked systems ?

Anyone have any direct experience of the 500W Q-Tec being a bad idea to use in your PC ? (I've just bought one).

    Thanks !

That pretty much sums it up.
Ive had one set on fire, and one die taking out almost everything attached to it.
I cant even find the amp ratings for the rails on their site !

It's comments like this that REALLY don't help.

Do you have first-hand experience of a Q-Tec product failing ? Exactly what product was it, what happened, etc ? Or are you just adding to what you heard from somebody, somwhere, sometime ?

There are several good reviews of the 550W I own out there.

Anyone have a 550W Q-Tec blow, or otherwise fail ? Please be specific.

Yes actually it was a 550watt q-tec which i bought for my second rig becasue of its price. i bought it on a spare of the moment thing and didnt check reviews. It took out my motherboard and processer. althgouht my ram and graphics card survived along with hard drives etc so i found my self kind of lucky. so my above statment holds. u want a burnt out system? get a q-tec. now i own 2 antec 480Watt trueblues and in my opinion it is one of the best out there.

Lol, we've done this 1 to death before :)

There are some people who have had major problems & there are other people that have had no problems - I don't know if Qtec changed some components or had a bad batch etc. at some point.

I've got 1 that has been flawless for well over a year (nearer 2) powering an overclocked nForce2 system with an ATI 9xxx series card (been upgraded a few times). It has better rails than my Antec True Blue 480W.
Having said that my current favourite is the Tagan 480W.

I've got an Enermax 431 watt-er, never had any problems, but those antec ones are sweet (I want a Globalwin or SilenX though)..

Sorry to resurrect such an old thread.. I just found it on a google search....

I'm in the process of upgrading my pc... I've found a nice prebuilt rig that I'll get but then mod it with some extra parts. Of course a better psu is the first thing on the list as this one is supplied with some generic 250w which cant be enough by a long shot.

Previously I ran my xp2000+ rig with a generic 300w which failed on me so I bought a Qtec gold dual fan 550w... I overpayed for it as I wanted one quickly and the local shop had it in stock. This ran fine at first. I dont know how stable it was or whatever, it all seemed fine, I mean 550w should be enough for anyone right?

Well I was getting random crashes all the time and one day my pc just turned off and would not power back up... I soon realised that the Qtec had failed and worse, it had taken out my cpu and motherboard in the process. FRIED!

Now at the time I couldnt afford an upgrade to I replaced the parts with some second hand ones from ebay. I currently use a generic 300w psu that came with my case. This works fine with my current rig. So it begs the question, if the generic psu can run this rig then why is the Qtec 550w so shoddy? Qtec claim it supplies all the right stuff on all thr right rails but that doesnt explain why it fried my rig.

550w should be overkill! So anyway I'm looking for a new psu, currently have my eyes on the enermax liberty 400w which should do the new pc well.

Anyhow... Any more thoughts on this situation?

My last thought would be.... DONT buy Qtec!

    I gotta disagree there Agent.

Hiper is average at best and there is way way better available for that price point.

    Haha...didnt notice that.

Tbph though, they have never been a 'refreshing' alternative to the good brand makes.
They were another 'bling' alternative to Ultra X-Connects...thats all.
