9800 AIW and digital sound driver problems...solved.
Seems my original posts about problems with ATIs newer drivers implementing digital sound across the bus instead of an external wired connect to the sound card`s input have disappeared.......some offence to someone?
Anyway, I now know why the stuttering sound and freezing pics and lockups happened. Very simple really, it needs 8x AGP to work and 4x AGP isn`t good enough. How do I know? I`ve just upgraded 3 systems from 4x to 8x NF3 with 9800s in all (streaming video around the house) and the digital sound now works perfectly instead of having to substitue the sound driver installed by the 8500s, ie non digital. Funny ATI have never offered this reason/solution over a long period and many complaints from many users around the net. |

That might be the reason we couldn't repro, AGP 8x is around for how long now? 4 years? I still feel a bit ashamed that the solution is that simple, but I doubt we test on 4x systems and I have to admit hat the system requirements state 8x/4x/2x. What can I say besides sorry for the inconvenience... Glad you found out, as a software engineer recently said, it's all about streaming, bandwidth and buffering. Any bottleneck can cause an issue.
Cheers,

Mike...your workload is too high with the continuous round of upgrades demanded in a competitive industry.
Glad I`m retired and can just tinker on. |
