CLI.EXE is cloning itself

With the 6.5 drivers:
When I first start up, there are two copies of CLI.EXE, each taking up 20-35mb of memory.
As time goes on, more duplicates are created and more memory is taken up. I've seen over 200mb of memory consumed by this. Terminating any of the duplicates removes the taskbar icon, and subsequently attempting to access control panel resuts in another duplicate being spawned.

I have observed this behavior consistantly on three different systems mixed-and-matched with an 8500, a 9550, and a 9600XT, on another system with an X1800XL, and on a third with an M300 IGP. As this constitutes every ATI system I have ever used with Catalyst Control Center, I'm inclined to believe that it's neither a hardware nor software conflict.

This is a drastic improvement from the first CCC releases, where I would often find a system slowing to a crawl as over 200 CLI.EXE processes were stuck constantly generating more copies of themselves and flooding my system in a way reminicent of core wars. However, the bloat is still troubleing to me.

I don't suppose there's any hope of getting the old non-bulky, non-intensive, and reliable control panel interface back, is there? I hate feeling like I'm poultry that's being flashed with dazzeling lights in an effort to keep me relaxed and placid as a giant hammer slams itself into my face and makes a goopy mess.

Hi KridOCaign,
I've reported this issue to the Catalyst guys. They said it's normal to have more than one instance of CLI and they recalled that issue you described that was fixed a while ago. As to the status of what's happening now, I'm not sure what they'll do about it (if anything) at this time. I'll keep you posted on any updates I get. Thanks for your feedback.

I have 6.5 and I am also getting about 4 or 5 CLI executes running in the background. Plus it take much longer to shut down after installing the latest software.

multiple CLI.exe 's

I am having the same issue. I was checking to see what processes were running as the system seems to be getting kind of slow as of late. At the moment I have 3 CLI.exe running @ 11.2, 3.8, and 6.7 megs respectively. Anyone know how to prevent this, or is this just the way it is supposed to be?

hello all, im using Catalyst 7.2 and i am getting a problem much the same as yous but its still slightly different....

i will be using my PC, normally, open up any folder and the PC begins to lag like hell for a minute or so, so i opend up Task Manager to catch what it was doing, and whenever it does this, my processes go from around 30 to +180 all the new processes are CLI.EXE, the lag usually becomes so bad the mouse stops working untill the processes go away.

its friggen annoying, and i find the only way to stop it is to completly nerf Catylist in the Services in control panel. but then i loose catalyst completly, so im stuffed either way.

and heres the other thing i wanna know..... WHY did they remove all the settings from the advanced tabs in the windows Display Properties, and give us Catalyst? wich runs on the Goddamn Dot Net ****work? nowonder its unstable, it relys on the unstable Dot Net framework.

CLI.EXE is cloning itself

I see this issue has still not been resolved...

I too am suffering from CLI.exe flooding, so bad, that my system literally becomes unusable -- I can't even get my Task Manager open at times and have been forced to slam my power button to get my damned computer back!

In one case, there were over 150 instances of this crap beating-up on my computer -- intolerable.

If I can click fast enough to catch the Ati2evxx.exe task as it bounces all over the screen with CLI.exe spawning and kill it, the CLI.exe spawn-flood stops. I'm running the latest and greatest drivers (I say that tongue in cheek) yet this issue still plagues me. What the hell is ATI doing about this (besides nothing, best I can tell)

I've been a bolster of ATI from the get-go and have purchased an uncountable number of graphics cards between work and home, this trend sure as hell will grind to a halt like so many PCs out there with ATI drivers if this issue isn't addressed.

Call me bitter, but I'm a heavy computer user and this issue alone has almost rendered my Acer TravelMate 8200 useless -- it's not like I can slap a nVidia in it.

Yet another differing experience...

I only find the CLI flood occurring when I am at the airport and I suspected that it was happening as a result of a conflict with my personal wireless access device and the telco settings trying to force me onto their network.

Geez call me suspicious, I had no idea that it was graphics related until I saw this post, D'oh!

BUT, why does the flood only occur in this situation? When I am at home or normal office situation it doesn't happen.

Anyone, anyone, Bueller?

I know this doesn't fix the issue, as some f yuo are getting muchos CLI, but it might help you understand how CLI works, and why several are needed.

ATI Catalyst™ Control Center - FAQ

A10: The ATI Catalyst™ Control Center has been separated into different components (a unique instance of CLI.exe per component) because it allows us to tune the characteristics of the process instance to the type of component. One component is called the “Runtime”, which acts as a server to all of the other client components. The two other client components are the “User-Interface” and the “System Tray”. The client “CLI.exe”s are tuned differently to enhance performance; the “User-Interface” client is optimized to run for short periods of time, whereas the “System Tray” client is designed to run for long periods of time. The “preview.exe” file (used for the 3D preview) is a based on the Win32 process (whereas the rest of the ATI Catalyst™ Control Center is based on the .NET framework), and is strictly an OpenGL application. Note that the preview “preview.exe” process is used only when the “User-Interface” is operating, and is ended as soon as the ATI Catalyst™ Control Center is closed.
