No sound after recording video?
I just installed the ATI TV Wonder Pro card a couple of days ago the card works great, no frame drop, nice clear video, and I can hear the sound fine when it plays.
I am using the card primarily to copy video from a VCR that I have permanently hooked up to my computer. I then want to edit the footage in Video Wave and output to DVD. So far I am only trying to save the video on my computer. But if I record the video there is no sound when I play it back no matter what player I use. I have tried capturing the video using several programs; Windows Movie Maker, Roxio Media Import and the native ATI Recorder, all record the Video fine but not the sound. Looking at other sites before I found this one, I found a number of other people who are having the same problem but no solutions. Anyone have any ideas. I would really like to get this resolved. My computer specs are… Dell XPS 800 3Ghx Dual Core P4 2Gig fast ram SoundBlaster Audigy sound card. DirectX 9c Latest Audio and Video Drivers. I want to make clear I can hear the sound from my comprter when I play the video so it is making it from the VCR through my soundcard! Mike Last edited by Mike Hawthorne; 01-05-2006 at 08:30 PM. |

Hi Mike,
How do you have the VCR hooked up to the TV Wonder? Also what do you mean by ATI recorder? Have you tried using ATI MMC (the one off the CD or the latest one off the website)?

HI Mike,
I have the VCR hooked to the card using the RCA connectors (composite, red, white and yellow cables). When I said Native ATI recorder I meant that I started the video and then clicked the record button on the tool palette. It records the video but not the sound. I did notice one thing that I didn't mention in the first message. When I start playing the video there is no sound until I click on the record button. Once I click record momentarily (just a quick click on and off) then the sound works and stays working until I shut the utility off completely even if I change tapes and stop and restart play etc. I don't know what the ATI MMC is. I think that I installed everything on the disk, but I just did the standard install wizard installation, I haven't looked for anything additional on the disk. I don’t see a utility in my ATI folder that is “Import Video” or anything like that. I’ll look on the disk and see if I can find a reference to MMC. Thanks for the help; I spent a week trying to get the Dazzle device that came with Media Creator Deluxe to work with no luck at all. It seems I’m not alone in that. There are a lot of people on various forums who can’t get it to work. That’s why I went and bought the ATI TV Wonder. Mike |

Hi again,
Ok I know what MMC is now and yes I have installed all the components. I have tried recording by clicking on TV, and then record on the tool bar. As far as I can see there is no separate utility for importing and saving video in the ATI toolset. Just to be sure I reinstalled the whole thing, which brought up another issue that I had forgotten about. After installation the process tries to configure DAO what ever that is. I think it is something related to Microsoft Office. It says that the information or disk needed for configuration is not present and after a lot of canceling I can get out of it. I solved the problem by uninstalling DAO through control panel. The only Microsoft Office application I use is Word. I don’t think this has any connection with the sound, when I ran a search for “DAO” on the ATI web site I came up with 0. But I did note that after installing the ATI MMC that DAO had been reactiveted on my computer. When I ran a search on Google I got a lot of ads for people offering to fix DAO errors for a fee. It seems to be a common problem when installing a number of applications. Any suggestions for resolving the sound problem will be greatly appreciated. Hi Mike,
DAO stands for Data Access Object and it's a component which MMC requires. I suggest you uninstall all the previous ATI multimedia applications you have and download the latest MMC and all its required components from our website: https://support.ati.com/ From the left-hand menu click the following: Drivers and Software -> Windows XP -> TV Tuners -> TV Wonder Pro/TV Wonder Pro Remote Control Edition Then on the right side of the screen click on the link "TV Wonder PRO Windows XP Drivers and Software". Install all 4 components that are listed there in the order that's listed there. Then you should be able to record just using MMC (which stands for Multimedia Center BTW). When you're in MMC just choose Composite as the video input. Let me know if that works out.

I've been trying for some time to connect to the driver page both through your link and from the ATI Home page and I keep getting this message.
Error response Error code 500. Message: Internal Server Error. I'll try again later. I have done some more searching and have found literally 100s of people having this same problem and very little in the way of answers other then to uninstall ATI DAO in control panel. The general consensuses is that it doesn’t seem to make any difference whether it is installed or not. Even when I get to the driver page this is going to be a big problem, as the only connection I can get here is dialup and if I remember right this is 90 meg or so download, at 4 kps this will take me 2 days. I did find one suggestion that said they solved the problem by downloading “DAO_MDAC.exe from Microsoft but a search there did not turn up any hits, I looked on Google for this file as well with no results, other then more people complaining about the problem. Everything I have read seems to indicate that this is a library related file an will not impact the sound issue. Is there any way to get the latest drivers and software for the ATI TV Wonder on disk? This would save me a lot of hassle trying to download this. Mike |

Hi Mike,
If you click on the link I posted before, it should work. Then follow the instructions that's there. There are 4 components to download and the biggest one is like 40 megs so I think it will be easiest for you to just download them one at a time (install them in the order specified there). Be sure to uninstall all other MMC related things you already have before you install the new one. Let me know if this works out.

I'm still getting this message when I click on the link you posted or try and access the support and drivers tab from the ATI home page.
Error response Error code 500. Message: Internal Server Error. All the other links on the ATI home page seem to work. In the mean time I have uninstalled all of the ATI software and then reinstall just the drivers for the TV Wonder Pro card. I can access the card through Video Wave, or Windows Movie Maker. I have to do some testing but I have sound when I imported a file through Video Wave, there was sound when I clicked on the preview button for the saved file in Video Wave but there was no sound when I played the file back through Windows Media Player. That's as far as I have gotten for now. Mike |

Hi Mike,
You can get to the same page by just going to www.ati.com and clicking on "Drivers and Software" on the top right side of the screen. Then follow the links I previously described. However, what you describe sounds like there's something not right with your system and maybe it's not even related to the card. Try getting all the latest stuff from the website and see how it goes.

Hi Mike,
I discovered that my DVD ripper which has always worked fine was recording video without sound as well. I deleted all the ATI software and then used Windows Restore to set my computer back to just before I installed the ATI package. Next I installed only the drivers for the TV Wonder card. Now everything is working normally. I can record video from my VCR using either Video Wave or Windows Movie Maker and I get sound when I play it back or open it in Video Wave. If I edit it and resave it in Video Wave I still have a sound track. My CD ripper is working normally as well. Of course I don’t have the TV and Record functions that are part of the ATI MMC but I’ll get along for now. When I can connect with the download page at ATI I’ll try downloading the new software and try again. I’m still getting the server error message when I try and connect. Mike |

Hi Mike,
I'm honestly not sure what's wrong with your computer/connection if you can't get onto our site. You should be able to go to www.ati.com (try just typing it in the address bar instead of clicking my link) and click the "Drivers & Software" link. If it says server not responding, then it's something on your end. Check your Internet settings or try downloading an update to Internet Explorer (or use Internet Explorer, if you're using some other application just to check to see if that's the problem). According to your last post, I think we can safely say the board itself is working. Try the latest MMC and see what happens with that, maybe you just had some software or Windows corruption or something.

Hi Mike,
I don't have any problem getting into the ATI site, only the Drivers and Software link. I clicked on other options on the site and they all opened up, but when I try the D&S site I get the server error message. I'm not getting this anyplace else. I've seen this before and it always seems to correct itself sooner of later. I have no idea what causes this. I haven't checked today I'll to and do it now. Mike |

Hi again,
I'm still getting the same thing. This is the explanation that I found. Internal Error 500 The server encountered an unexpected condition which prevented it from fulfilling the request. I'll look at my proxy setting etc, and see if I can find anything. Mike |

Hi once more...
I disabled my proxy settings and now I can get into the site... Now for some reason I'm having problems downloading the files. Following is a post that I placed on the GetRight forum. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I'm having problem downloading software and drivers from ATI using GetRight. I navigate to the link that downloads that new drivers and I click on it. The GetRight window opens and shows the correct file name in the “file name” window. 9-13_mmc_uci.exe I select my ATI folder as the download location. I click on download. The file it downloads is.... leech.asp I have tried this repeatedly. I have pasted the entire address... https://a248.e.akamai.net/f/674/9206...13_mmc_uci.exe Into the GetRight window and tried to download it that way. The same thing happens. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I think there is a curse on this thing. The good news is that I can do what I need to do at this time. I'll get this straightened out eventually. Mike |
