I think they're both very good films, The Ring is certainly one of the best Hollywood remakes in a long while.

The Hollywood version is a little more coherent and easier to follow. It retains most of the look and feel of the original, which is rare for Hollywood these days. The downside is that it introduces these hideous "cookie-cutter" characters that are the blight of so many Hollywood films (go-getting mom who doesn't have time for her kids, the dysfunctional dad who is caring and loving deep-down, the repulsively cute kid...). I was happy to see that they kept the original ending though.

I think the Japanese original just about wins out for me because the characters in it are a little more three-dimensional.

Both great films, but the original tops the remake for me, Sadako is just so damn freaky!

Oh, but the little boy in the remake (Yoichi in the original) has the same name as me, which freaked me out when i went to see it in the cinema with some mates!

    On your 'to do' list

yeah.... Ring 2 was alright... didnt have the same apeal to me as ring but ring 0 was like an F'ing drama or something!! it was done by a different director.... that was the problem with it! hideo nakata (ring, ring 2, dark water) is a god of suspense and creepiness....

i liked the japenese original over the american attempt, but i wouldnt watch the second again. the only part that made ring 2 feel worth watching was the bit with the hair creeping out of the stretcher near the start, proper freaky if the lights are turned off where you're watching it...

apart from that, though, it dragged like hell.
