This upscales to 1080i. It has a Coaxial Digital Audio-out. It also has USB and SD-card reading abilities in addition to all that other stuff you wanted. And it's £30. Win!

upscaling to 1080i might not be the best idea.

    but it is damn cheap.

I have one (actually, I've picked up three in total - two for mates), and it's an absolute bargain for £30. It's kinda Eltax-branded, but not (long story).

However, I have a 32" SDTV, so I haven't tried the upscaler. There was a thread about this player in the Bargains forum not too long ago, with quite a lot of responses - might be worth digging up. I cannot recall anyone purchasing one and regretting it, though.

I owned a Samsung player for a little while & was deeply unimpressed - I bought a Toshiba to replace it & it was a lot better. I ended up getting a 2nd hand Denon 2910 & it does the job nicely (It upscales from both its DVI & HDMI outputs into my TV & Projector, though not at the same time - at the projectors native resolution 720p

i think when it comes to plain upscaling DVD players the technology has reached its limit. my heart is saying Samsung 1080P7 or the upcoming Sony DVP-NS78. what do you think?

Well, there's not an awful lot of need for players to upscale any more. Most TV's will make a decent enough hash of it now. In many cases better than an upscaling DVD.

And if, as you hinted elsewhere, you're contemplating buying a PS3, I'd say that's the road to go down. Upscales DVD's as well as pretty much anything mass market, and plays Blu-Rays too. Job done.

could see what you're saying. but i still think £425 for a PS3 (with all those other stuff thrown in) still is expensive for the ordinary gamer. and there has been "conflicting" issues as to whether the PS3 can upscale up to 1080i or 1080p. somebody is saying Yes somebody is saying No.

PS3 does 1080p, and does it well by all accounts. Remember though, that if you have the capability to display a 1080p image, then the set you're displaying it on will also have the ability to upscale to 1080p. Probably not as well as PS3, but almost certainly better than a £50 upscaling DVD.

Therefore, what's possibly a more important question is: what screen do you have, or are you planning on buying ?

Asda have one in for 30 quid at the moment. I've got one, and it's great for what is after all, about a rounds worth of drinks!

What TV do you have ? There's no need for an upscaling player if you have a decent screen. And I'm presuming you do if you're looking for a 1080 upscaler.
