What annoys me is that people will spend £40 or more on cables in a £300 hi-fi. No, you fools! Get better speakers or headphones, they make way more difference. Sorry if I sound like I'm disparaging your thread Zak. I just want to make it clear to people that £10 cables are good enough unless you're running a system worth several grand and you have money to burn. Rich :¬) |

I didnt notice anybody talking about buying expensive cables just good ones. Or finally getting cable that meens you can put your gear where you want it, a 4m optical for £8, they also do long length of various other stuff. I personally could use a 10m 3.5mm jack-phono so I can record audio from my hifi to the PC, with that length shielding could be handy, but at £8.50 im not even going to bother looking at cheap cable.
Changing the cables on a £300 dixons special probably isnt going to make any difference, as most of the £300 went in to the flashing lights and revolving control panel, but changing the cables on a £300 seperates system often will. Also in my case I get stuff second hand, this includes Sennheiser HD590 headphones for £15, my AV amp which was free and my AV speakers which were £130 (retail at £450). A lot of this kind of stuff doesent come with cables. I prefer to connect my £700 AV setup (which I paid £130 for) with good cables I wont have to replace, rather than use bell wire and the total cost of the cables was £30 inc the optical for the dvd, I also get to flog the spare speaker cable to the max power lads for their in car stuff. Copyed from other thread:
Mmm, nice prices ... shame correctly setup mains cable gives better performance for speakers than alot of those so called 'pro' and 'referance' leads . Fair enough on the line level cables though, gonna need some more for my new home cinema

If your after cheap stuff watch out for richersounds doing a deal, especially on headphones, loads of people upgrade and sell of their old stuff. The amp I was just lucky, somebody at work was given it when his hifi friend upgraded, he passed it on to me as he didnt know what it was. AC Speakers were a private deal from a non selling item on ebay, reason they didnt sell was they aint usually found in UK, mainly europe, luckilly he lived nearby so could test them. My main music system was a richer sounds jobby, combination of denon, sony, yamaha and JPW. Again was just lucky with that, did a demo on the main bits, decided to buy them and they forgot to charge me for the upgrades from the standard price. Richers were doing the HD600 or might have been HD650 for £50 at one point, so there were loads of the lower models going cheap on the AV forums.

My friend still has the 580s, I should get them back off him really, I could do with a spare pair for TV etc.I was hoping that as the special headphone deals went higher and higher up the Sennheiser range that I'd be able to get a pair of electrostatics for £200 last year. Didn't happen though ![]() .Rich :¬) Last edited by Rave; 28-01-2004 at 04:20 PM. |

My local richersounds in in sevenoaks and thers a big 7oaks hifi or sound and vision or whatever the name is this month. Anyway the richersounds is about the size of a standard bog cubicle and has queues every weekend, at 7oaks hifi the workers outnumber the customers normally 3-1. I was after a minidisc player a few years back went to richers think it was £120, went to 7oaks hifi £180. Asked the bloke he then slags off richers but ends up dropping his price to match. So can be worth asking in their shops as well, 7oaks dont sell any portable stuff anymore (might jus be my branch), again asked bod why reply is ooo they kept breaking, not anything to do with the competition then, thats a relief. I was also after a bog standard headphone extension cable for the PC's mic input, I explained what it was for a £10 headphone mic jobby for playing games, bloke brings back a £25 cable with volume on it, strangely he didnt get a sale.

Hmmm. My heavy-duty cat-5 cabling is excellent. I doubt I'll notice any difference in a blind test if I bought some proper stuff. I thought about it, but decided not to waste my money. Having proper interconnects however is always wise. Eliminates interference.
Scart (or SVHS or whatever interface you use) cables and digital/analog audio cables are the most important. Higher quality cables = less interference!
