Problem with my Floorstanding Speaker
Hi guys one of my Floorstanders ACOUSTIC ENERGY AEGIS EVO3 has starting making like a fuzzy sound sometimes when playing music and then can cut out sometimes when watching a film like 300 or something. I only have the volume at 70%. I have worked out that its the tweeter.
I have had the speakers since August so i contacted the people i bought them from who are Peter Tyson. They have been really helpful and said they are still under warranty etc but said today that "I will say however, due to the nature of speakers if the fault has occurred due to over driving the repair will be chargeable." What does that mean? Surely if they are faulty i shouldn't have to pay anything? Neon |

Re: Problem with my Floorstanding Speaker
Its an Onkyo amp. You generally have to turn them up higher to hear them eg 40-45%. Its not at 70% all the time. What i meant by that was that thats the highest i have ever set them too. Usually they sit at 45%. I mean if speakers arent able to go at 70% volume then i dont know what the world has come too! lol

I've just spoken to an engineer at work (former Alpine engineer) his general thoughts are to swap the amp for something else (if possible) any sort of amp can be used. Are you getting the same issues? Do the same with the speakers, use the rears. His first thought were the amp was clipping (overdriving) which will result in damaging your speakers. If your not in a position to try out those options then you will have to return them to the shop you got them from to have them tested. |

Re: Problem with my Floorstanding Speaker
Its only happening with one speaker the rest are fine. Does that make a difference? I unfortunatly dont have another amp to check it with. Also ive been using the speakers since august and the problem has only cropped up now.

Re: Problem with my Floorstanding Speaker
Try changing the inputs around. CD/DVD swap left and right over, then test again. Swap speaker O/P around. Is the same speaker still playing up? If so then the speaker is at fault.

And tweeters generally blow more easily than mid/bass drivers if you've pushed too hard.I'd have to disagree that setting the amp volume at 70% is problematic though, unless 70% of the amps power is a good bit more than 100% of the speakers power handling. My Arcam amp goes to 72 on it's numeric scale, and I've been assured by Arcam that 65 is perfectly acceptable for the amp. I would agree that clipping could cause the problem though. It generally occurs when the amp is going full-pelt, and simply can't deliver what it should, therefore it "clips" the output. The output is distorted, and without going into the science of it (try Wiki ), basucally it sends something to the speakers that's not terribly speaker friendly. As has been said, just swap L&R speaker cables about at amp end. If the same speaker has the same fault when driven by the other channel, it's that speaker, not the amp. |
