Is the such a thing as upscaling component DVD player

Hey guys basically i was looking for a dvd player that would upscale my films for use on my lcd but being that its quite an old tv it doesnt have a hdmi port instead it has two components, the tv's own upscalng isnt brilliant but it does look pretty good playing my xbox in its native 720p hence this question

also would i notice much difference anyway seeing as my current dvd player outputs at 576p which admittedly looks ok.

Re: Is the such a thing as upscaling component DVD player

There are a few players out there that do it, but not many, as I think it's a copy-protection issue. I'm pretty sure the DVD Forum (or whatever the DVD standard governing body are called) don't allow it. There are a few players on the market that do, for whatever reason. Some can also be hacked (as with region coding) to allow it too.

I'm not sure if it'd be very beneficial to you though. I guess your TV is a x768 res set, so most likely the DVD player would upscale to 720, then the set would have to scale again. Probably better just outputting at 576p and letting the set scale once

I'd only say it'd be worth it if you were buying one of the new breed of upscaling DVD players, but I guess you can't without an HDMI socket. Bummer.

the samsung hd950 was a hdmi machine that could be handset hacked to upscale via component, plus made multi region. i think the hd850 could do the same.

thing is, for budget players it's unlikely the dvd player is going to upscale better than your lcd/plasma can so if you have a decent component output that should be fine

The general consensus from the hardcore AV buffs is that either your TVs upscaling is better then any sub-£1000 players or your TV isn't of sufficient quality to gain any benefit from upscaling.

Don't think that upscaling to 720p is going to show the same benefits as native 720p. You cannot add detail back in that was never there in the first place.

that's pretty much right, although there are a few half decent sub £1000 players, although over about the £500 mark. not many people want to shell out that much for the last few days of SD though

if a cheap hdmi player is better than your previous model it could just be a sign that the previous model wasn't up to much. i doubt many would replace a decent non hdmi player with a cheap hdmi player
