Re: Has Channel 4 gone HD on Freeview?

all freeview signals are broadcast in 704x576, where as terrestrial 4:3 is 640x480.

I would agree that C4 does look good compared to some of the freeview channels. This is partially down to how much bandwidth they have got on that particular channel, how well it is encoded, the quality of the original recording and of course partially down to the capabilities of the image processor in your TV or set-top box.

Dead-Set , the series about zombies based in the big brother house is one of the worst quality broadcasts I have seen on C4, whilst I have seen some of the best quality freeview broadcasts on C4.....

Sorry for getting stressed in the previous post but I have been trying to answer the original chap's post whilst other people seem intent on taking the thread off-topic and being completely useless at trying to help.

Georgey291, what size screen are you viewing the freeview on? on 15-22" TVs, Freeview can look very good quality, but certainly anything about 32" and freeview starts to struggle and looks pretty poor.

Re: Has Channel 4 gone HD on Freeview?

Well i'm guessing thats either an R88 (blue light on the bottom) or 4 series plasma.. Either way they have a very average freeview tuner built in. I have a 32" R88 myself and im the first to admit the freeview is average, and my screen is alot smaller than yours

As for the USB tuner, well they vary wildly and I haven't used one in a while. The quality largely depends on the decoding software as this is entirely what USB tuners rely on. Certainly the PCI tuner cards tend to be of much better quality because they have proper dedicated decoding chip and their own image processor.

Personally if I had a TV the size of yours I would certainly have either cable or sky going into it and would be trying to use as much High-Def content as possible to retain image quality on a screen of this size.

You can get a Sky+HD box from £29 with free install at the moment, which is very good value although personally I prefer the Virgin Media service with triple tuner (i.e. record 2 channels and watch another) as well as access to on-demand content and BBC iPlayer.

Freeview resolutions vary between 720x576 (BBC1) to 544x576 (More4). Analog doesn't have a resolution per se (though PAL has a vertical field count of 625)
