Playing hard drive media through a lcd tv

Don't really know anything about how to do this other than saw some kind of box that does it. Basically i have all my media stored on my pc and want to purchase a new lcd tv and be able to play that media on the tv.

Im wondering which is the cheapest and best way of doing this?

sorry if this has been talked about before, if you could just direct me to that thread thanks

If your PC and TV will be in the same room, then juest get a long cable. Preferably HDMI (or DVI to HDMI if an HDMI is not possible) over the likes of VGA and hook it up to the TV.

Switch to the correct input on the TV and it should work fine - you'll probably have to set your graphics card to use the second screen, by cloning or extending it. The option will be in the control panel.

If they're not in the same room, you'll need some kind of media player. As to what to choose, it depends on what you want to play: SD or HD content?

If they are not in the same room you will need to buy a media streamer, or network media tank. I'm personally waiting for the popcorn hour c-200 to be released, sometime next month. Alternatively you can stream media via a XBOX or PS3, you may also consider the Xtreamer. HTH.

If i chose to run a cable from my pc to a hdtv then what cable would i need?

I mean i understand hdmi carries sound and video, and dvi carries video only. So if i ran a dvi - hdmi cable i would have no sound i take it? If i used a dvi - hdmi adaptor on my dvi port on my gfx card
( which is a geforce 8800GTS 320mb ) and then ran a hdmi cable would that equal picture and sound?

Im a little confused how to get picture and sound between the pc and tv, or would i need a seperate cable for audio?

You would need a separate cable for sound

    e.g

So if i was to use http://www.amazon.co.uk/FPUK-3-5mm-S...8898215&sr=1-1

    and

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/10m-HDMI-DVI...8898300&sr=1-3

That would work to display anything from my pc onto the tv upto 1080p with sound?

ideally you would want digital sound output. Is the sound going into the tv or a separate amp?
