If it's crap at the end...

    ...it's all crap!

Okay, so I have this ongoing disagreement with my brother. He says that a film, or game or whatever can be good throughout but have a really crap ending and still be good. I say that more often than not, a crap ending filters back and ruins the whole experience.

Case in point, the film, A.I. - Beautifully filmed, very intruiging and for the start and middle, and set to be a decent film, until, all that stupid nonsense about an ice-age, and alien civilisations, and all that poop. Completely ruined the film. "What was all that about?" I screamed. "What a complete waste of 2 hours" or whatever it was. So disappointing, such a waste.

So, crap ending = crap in its entirety, or not?

    Nah.

28 Days Later I thought was a great film, just has a bad ending.

And I thought A.I was the crappest film I've ever seen. Hated it, bloody awful

Have to agree with you on this one mate. If they'd only have cut the happy ending off it, they would have had a MUCH better movie IMHO.
I ended up ripping my original DVD of this just to cut the happy ending and it makes a massive difference.

Yepp that's it. Give me a nice depressing ending anyday. The Dawn of the Dead remake is a nice example of this too. Just when you think it's all over and you've got a semi-happy ending.....WHAM!! Video-diary splatterfest

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is another good film which suffers from the weak ending syndrome. I find it just sort of peeters out for me......... But I can hardly call it a crap movie because of that.

Depends on the film and the ending... Same sort of thing as obvious plots / sign posting. For what it's worth when watching something like Carlito's way it's damn obvious what's happening and what's going to happen - that's the point of the film - it doesn't dissapoint but takes you along with it. Same thing with the Shawshank Redemption (though less obvious and much more moving). On the other side of things even though I thought Heat was an OK film the ending kind of disappointed me too. Same thing for Seven. It doesn't have to have a twist at the end to be a good film either - remember when every other film had a 'suprise ending' after The Usual Suspects was released...?

I agree with malfunction although I think how good a film is depends on expectation as well. Take the matrix 3 - Thought the first one was fantastic, the second one was good and the third one? Oh dear, let's just say somewhat below what I would expect judging from the first two films!

Deffo on that one - I remember the first batman film was hyped up to stupid levels. It's actually a very good film IMO (for the genre at least) but I was so disappointed when I actually saw it after all the hype.

Nah the whole film has to be crap for it to be a crap film. However a crap ending can knock points off, you only have to look at matrix revolutions, it has a terrible ending in comparision to what went before it, and i dont care what any one says, the film(s) as a whole was amazing imo

Titanic... what a rotten ending and a pointless film... you sit there for two hours watching a badly told 'love' story, knowing ALL the time that the damn thing is gonna sink... and you also know that Jack is gonna die, cos you're told at the beggining by the old bird about it... what a waste of time...

That's true...whatever else the film was like, to have that old lady at the end act all batty (out of character for the rest of her part) and chuck the thing over the side - completely stupid.

Why didn't they just ignore the whole 'old lady' bit and just show the main story as is?

matrix 3 was lets just say, a bridge too far, but i kind of a agree with whats said but then there has been a lot of games and films that played and watched and thought they good all the way thru and stank at the end but they were still good, its just a matter of forgetting the ending ever happened
