Only bit relating to US The Office I've ever seen was an interview with Ricky G where they showed him a picture of the actor that was going to play their David Brent. It was the usual handsome, toothy, tanned Hollywood type guy. As soon as I saw it I thought "canned laughter..."

If the american Red Dwarf is anything to go by, then it's going to be awful. Caught the second pilot they made for that.... Why did they have to make everyone in these things so "nice" - they made Lister not like curries, biting his toenails, playing the guitar really, really badly.... (they even made the cat female in the first pilot). They've been making bad copies of our stuff for years thou (they even remade a couple of episodes of fawlty towers) - and they don't seem to be stopping now Now go away before I taunt you a second time.

It seems to be a bit of a weird phenomenon to be honest. Can you imagine a British version of Friends or Frasier. I don't see why they can't just show the original like we tend to do with their comedies (exception above noted) There was a guardian article about the pilot which said it was watched in stony silence by all the US journalists Knight 1: We are now no longer the Knights who say Ni. Knight 2: NI. Other Knights: Shh... Knight 1: We are now the Knights who say..."Ekki-Ekki-Ekki-Ekki-PTANG. Zoom-Boing. Z'nourrwringmm.

You're never going to get exact copies of American \ UK shows working on the otherside of the pond, as the one side doesn't 'get' what the otherside is trying to do. The Yanks are never going to be able to make Fawlty Towers, the Office, Red Dwarf, Blackadder, the Young Ones, Porridge, or the likes, and everytime they try, its a total cock up. The best recipe, as someone said, is to import a few quality shows, and leave it at that. So, we can have our Brit programmes, and sprinkle them with a few quality American shows, such as early Friends, the Sopranos (Utter quality), the Simpsons, etc. That's the perfect mix. |

Thing is that what they parody so well is actually the US management style, I can picture Americans I know looking at it and thinking, "yeah geez, good idea" to some of Gervais' funnier inspired ideas. It is too much like what US management is like to be funny there. The Cow by Ogden Nash The cow is of the bovine ilk; One end is moo, the other, milk.
