    getting a bass guitar!!!

yeah baby, never taken an intrest to the guitar but my mate lent me his bass. i loved it so much so that i've placed a deposit on one in academy of sound in manchester, so tonight i'll be the proud owner of a manhatten 5 string bass and amp!

so far i know the opening part to metalica's one. the guitar bit not bass as it sounds way nicer on a bass!

Nice one dude Bassists are always in demand for bands (round 'ere anyway) so if you wanna do that you made the right choice as every mother and her brothers son plays guitar

It is also imo way easier to pick up, I learned some korn basslines pretty quickly when i was messing around a while ago detuning my guitar to stupidly low levels.

Havn't heard much of Manhattan beyond they're les paul copy's which are meant to be pretty decent for the price so make sure you post a few pic's when you've got it

If you like metallica, then the bass solo from the Cunning Stunts DVD is really nice, and quite easy to play. Also the opening part of 'My Friend of Misery'.

You'll get it after some practice, i remember starting out and it took a serious amount of concentration and much fumbling to play otherside by the chilli peppers you get a feel for it though after a while

I can host some pics for you if you wanna e-mail them too the.incredible.hank@gmail.com

I played bass in bands when i was a lad. LOL here's a pick of me onstage in 1988.

It's a Aria Pro 2 ZZB Deluxe.I saved £15 a week for 5 months when i was 16 to buy that beast. The band was called Saratoga.Keep at it m8 it's great fun.Everyone wants to be the guitar hero. Some of the best times ive had have been at practice or gigging.Just don't expect to become Great overnight and to get rich....

I did it myself . I was on a printing training scheme. So i put the materials at my disposal to good use...The guitarist in the band had the red and black version of the same guitar. He wouldn't wear the red and black vets i did for him. lol

www.basstabarchive.com is another good site for bass tabs, went out of action for about a year but looks like it's getting updates again now, best thing about it is that they only keep one version of tab for each song so you don't have to go hunting through to find the correct version, which can be hard if you're just starting out. they must check all submitted tab is correct first or have the same people right it each time who they know will be correct or something.

i've still got my first bass, it's a fretless yamaha, and i love it, i took my guitar playing mate with me (who happened to play bass in a band at the time) afterall it was after playing his that i decided i wanted to invest and just said, look i've got £300 to spend, £400 if i push it, which would you choose?

i had my eyes on the £400 cool looking blue oxbow (or something like that) of course and we tried them all, i'm so glad i took his advice, just wish they had it in the natural wood colour (rather than black) then the fretted version they had there. but this has a really nice sound and most importantly, it's light as a feather!!! it wasn't until i played his again (and hated it) that i realised how nice it was.

a word of caution though : BUYING INSTRUMENTS IS ADDICTIVE, haha, well for me at least

haha, this thread has it so that i am now sitting infront of the pc surrounded by instruments, i can never play just one. yes G.A.S is a terrifying disease, but for me it's more than guitars, it includes kazoos and bongos too. i still want a nice djembe. don't think i'm too far over the grand mark myself.

my favourite has to be my 6 string Taylor big baby acoustic, cost me about £300 - 350 and worth every penny, if only i had bought that rare earth sound hole and mic pick up for it when i had the money. although my worst situation for G.A.S was when i walked into my local shop one day and on the wall they had a awesome 4 string warwick corvette proline with fully active emg pick ups, bubinga body, drop D switch on E string and finished with anodised black tuners, bridge etc... i was on my lunch break from work and think i almost soiled my underwear when i saw it, i picked it up, played it and fell in love. But i mean come on, it's way too expensive i thought, i put it back on the shelf and stared at it. asked the guy behind the counter and he said it was one they had ordered in for someone. i thought, oh well i might as well know the price so i ask. my jaw dropped as he said £750, in my eyes that was a damn bargain for an amazing gig worthy bass. i had to ask him a second time, and he comfirmed it. i instantly took out my wallet and pulled out my credit card, that i think i had just cleared off. i couldn't really afford it but thought, buy it now, pay it off over a few months. i spent my entire hour lunch break in that music shop looking at my credit card trying to decide. eventually i decided i would at least wait til pay day, and experience what it was like to be debt free for at least a week, and managed to get my credit card back in my wallet. i think thats the only time i've ever been able to resist G.A.S, and it's a good thing too because i got "let go" from work about 2 weeks later. haha

at this point i feel like standing up and saying "hi, my names adam and i'm an addict"
