    Surround Sound for my Shuttle

1st of all, sorry for double post, but I wanted to get maximum exposure to my thread!

I'm going to be getting a shuttle in the next couple of weeks and it will be in my bedroom as a music system + general PC with a bit of games action too.

    Now......

I would love to have surround sound in my room.

What speakers are good, bad and the damn right ugly.

What should I avoid? Any brand names reccommended?

I know that you get what you pay for, but there is a compromise.

Cheaper is better, but I would like clear bassline, with the capability to hit the high note too, whilst still providing mid-bass tones...

Any suggestions? What online retailers? Or even high street.

    Kind Regards

    Nick

[edit]: Oh, and what about wires? Where do I stick em?

Marantz SR5300 £250 from richer sounds
3 pairs of mission m71i's £150 from richer sounds (edit. £180, sorry)
M-Audio Revolution 7.1 sound card £70 from scan

you'll need a digital coaxial cable to connect sound card to amplifier, looking at £15-20 (profigold do a good one for £20), and speaker cable for each of your speakers, Richer Sounds will probably chuck in some cheap Gale cable if you ask nicely.

so for under £500 all in and you'll get a stonking little 6.1 surround system! if your looking to spend a bit more than spend it on some better speakers and speaker cable and prehaps a sub? if you give a budget then i could have a look at getting something as good as possible inside that.

    "little system"? Rofl alright then!!

The inspire 5100's aren't terrible, but nowhere near as good as more expensive systems. Get the higher up Inspire models or a Logitech set.

hehe, well, compared to 6 mammoth mission m74i's at least

proper hi-fi is definately worth it over computer speakers if you can afford it though, a system like i suggested above for under £500 will sound so much better than any logitech or creative kit.

i think you really need to post a budget here lead_head so i don't get too carried away!

My new Inspire 5500's do my bedroom well. Nice clear bass, and a bit of range action as well. Nice kit for the ~£130 I picked em up for.

    Damn straight, best advice today.

A seperates system will outperform ANY all in one system/computer speakers/etc.

£500 is a bit too much!

Was lookin at about £80 range....

I know seperates are much better than an all in one system, thats why downstairs I got about £18k's worth of seperates....

But this is for my room, so I can "escape" and browse the net etc....

Aside from the fact that these things look ugly, they sound horrible as well... You can't put any half decent volume on them. The sat-sub cross-over is all over the place and the mid channel hasn't got enough umph. If you don't care about looks and sound quality, they should be just fine.

He's right. I wouldn't say they're terrible for what they are, just not very good. Lol.

Its not mine its my dads, but i still use it

He gets most of it 2nd hand, but if it was brand new then it would be somewhere near £18k (I think :s)

I will get him to write down the stuff. I know he's got a lot of Naim Audio stuff

That was a nice spec, can you make something up like that for a bit cheaper say 300-350?

oops, got the price of the m71i's wrong they are in fact £60 a pair so £180 for 6 from richer sounds, still a bargain though! not sure about cheaper wol, you can get an sr4300 (£200 from RS) rather than an sr5300, saving £50, but with my speaker pricing error, still works out at £470 for amp, speakers, cable and sound card and i'm not really sure what to chop out from that without sacrificing lots of quality, unless you've got a decent sound card already? there are cheaper components available of course, i just wouldn't like to recommend any of them

lead head, yeh, naim make some nice kit, wish i had that kind of money to spend on HT kit, i'm thinking 45 stacked Servo 15 subs should just about cover my bass requirements!
