    Angry Sennheiser headphone cables

Damnit! The cable on my HD600s has a loose connection at the plug end. This is the second pair of Senns I've had this happen to. Anyone know where I can get a cheap replacement, or better still an aftermarket one that isn't so fragile?

I'll just have to fiddle it back in place in the meantime.

Yep, but the mini jack is sennheiser stuff, not easy to find so you can make replacements. Check the headphones and cables section at www.head-fi.org , you should be able to find something there.

It's not really a jack plug at all at the headphone end, it's a flat plug with two small, differently sized prongs coming out of it. All my Sennheisers have used the same plug (I've had 565s, 580s and 600s so far).

head-fi seems to be full of people comparing the (IMO imaginary) merits of 100$+ cables unfortunately.

The cheapest I've found for a replacement cable so far is £20- which is a hell of a lot for something that clearly costs about a quid to make.

That's a much more sensible design TBH, replacement Sennheiser type plugs are apparently impossible to get hold of. Still, I could probably lash up something vaguely suitable with a small block of wood and a couple of paperclips....bit of a faff though. I'll see if I can repair the connection without damaging the plug to the point of unusability first.

    This is the offending plug:

I forgot to include anything for scale, but it's a fingernail's width roughly, about 1cm across, and it goes in far enough to completely obscure the R. I'll only be able to fix it myself if the break is lower than that, otherwise I'll have no way of getting it in and out. Silly design TBH.

fun - I had to re-make those with studio cans (ended up replacing them with £120 "budget" phones) - I ended up removing the jack in the cans and hardwiring the cable.
they're a nightmare. best permenant fix is to take them into a senny authorised service center - and have them replace the fittings with mini-jacks. that way you can re-solder your own connectors - they should just be able to replace the shell and the fitting.

That would be ideal, but it'd probably cost as much as the headphones did originally- I only paid £100 for them!

On the HD600 the plug socket is an integrated part of the driver unit housing as far as I can see- I doubt it'd be a trivial job.

What I might do is hack the plug to pieces with some snips, then resolder the wires to the two little prongs. Then I could wrap them in a layer of insulating tape and crimp a small bit of sheet metal around them to make something strong enough to shove in the socket. A fiddly job, but it should work.

It probably is, but it's still £20, which is a hell of a lot for a cruddy little lead which I know from experience is very badly made.

Cheers for looking though mate, I don't mean to sound ungrateful.

    Hi,

Can you please tell me how you got around this problem? I have a pair of HD580s with the same lead and my plug has gone as well. These stupidly designed cables are not nearly strong enough. Is the link above for the cable costing £19.99 the correct cable. It doesn't give details. I do music production and this problem has ended my work until I find a fix.

    Thanks.
