Philips DVD590MT, Is it a bad buy?

Well, this is what it looks like...

I just ordered the REFURBISHED version and I'm starting to second quess my self. 95% of the user reviews are bad! And this product is no longer listed on Philips web site... Does anyone have one of these? If so how is it doing? Does it skip alot?

Edit: Also, I plan to burn some downloaded vids 200 MBs - 720 MBs to a VCD or SVCD... The files are in *.rm format so I will have to convert them first. I was wondering what the diference is between SVCD and VCD? Also, what app should I use to burn SVCD files to a CD? Can I just burn via windows drag and drop once the files are in SVCD format?

Obviously I'm new to this and I apreciate any help or advice you can give me!

Edit #2: I'm converting one of the vids 720 MBs and its taking ages! Literaly! Looks like 3 hours a peice to convert!

Can't speak for the hardware, but the primary difference between VCD and SVCD is the resolution; see VideoHelp for details.

Software wise, no; you'll need some sort of authoring package; I know Nero handles it just fine though.

And yes, video encoding can take a wee while; I had to convert some stuff to and from WMV, AVI and QuickTime not so long ago, and me poor old dual Athlon was definitely creaking...
