    Howcome the UK doesn't get the official Sony RGB/Component cables for PS2?

    I've been looking for these for a while:

    http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...games&n=507846

    The americans have it, they only do 3rd party here, and i'm afraid a switchable cable reduces quality, that and i don't know which of the 3rd party brands make a good RGB cable

    RGB near enough = component though

    I asked some online PS2 accessory shop and they said they've never seen an official RGB cable.

    5lab is right - component is YUV not RGB IIRC. And AFAIK - despite what you may read - RGB is better anyway. If you can source an old PS1 RGB cable that should work fine - the official Sony PS2 one is rather expensive (if you can actually find it in stock anywhere)

    Lots of good and bad stuff on the net regarding RGB and component but I think the above covers it pretty well.

    In all honesty there'll not be much difference between RGB and Component quality wise, but (especially for gaming) RGB should have the edge. Since RGB cables are much easier to come by anyway, that's what you should use.

    Bear in mind also that nearly all TVs can accept an RGB signal but very few in the <£700 range can accept component.

    I'll try and ebay a PS1 RGB cable, but top-choice 3rd party recommendations are welcomed

    EDIT: I think i'll go with this one:

    Looks like it'll be fine

    Sony do sell Official RGB/Component cables in the UK.

    http://shop.uk.playstation.com/categ...%20Accessories

    The component cable is quite a reasonable price at £15.49 but the RGB cable is still £29.99 (bargain really, i paid £34.99 when i had a PS1)

    RGB=the 3 native signals used to drive the 3 primary colours. You can't get any purer than that.

    Component (YUV aka Y Cb Cr) is almost functionally equivalent. There is a luminance (B&W) signal plus two difference signals that are used to calculate the individual RGB channels. Something like this (I am guessing at these formulae):
    R=Y-Cr
    B=Y-Cb
    G=Y-R-B

    The advantage of YUV is that the Cr&Cb signals require less bandwidth.

    The disadvantage of YUV is that the Cr&Cb signals may be allocated less bandwidth. i.e. some loss of colour purity is considered acceptable.

    I don't know if the PS3 will take the same cable so i'm not going to spend £30 on something that'll only be useful for a year

    Quite ridiculous price, but thanks for the link.

    I'll go with the ebay one
