    HDTV - 1080p - What PC?

Just wondering what kind of beast of a PC you need to run this type of video smoothly.

My PC can hardly handle 720p and just curls up and dies on 1080p.

Well (going by your sig) the 6800 series cards have broken HDTV video acceleration. It's a known bug (and unfixable). My AXP@2300MHz + 9700 copes with 720p with no probs at all (less than 30% CPU utilisation). I've never tried 1080p since I don't have a screen good enough to display it but I reckon it could cope with that too.

My XP2400+ with 6800Ultra plays 1080p OK with occasional brief pauses, BUT the sound goes off & on (for long periods.) I assumed it was low CPU power, but I'm wondering if the 6800U bug is involved now.
    720P playback is OK.

My A64 3500+ with 2x6600GT plays 1080p just fine. Presumably SLI isn't used for HD video playback?, so one 6600GT should be OK on its own.

It does sound like a 6800 problem to me. They fixed the bug in the 6600/6200 series cards.

I can run both fine on my machine (2400XP @ 2.4Ghz, FX5950U although I dont' think my GFX card can hardware render it).

I think you're being a bit generous calling it 'a bug'. It was a touted feature of the chipset, and it's broken. In my opinion the hardware doesn't do what it's supposed to, it'd be like buying a car only to find the AC doesn't work and was unrepairable.

How the hell did it get passed testing if it didn't work?
