Recommend me a DivX/DVD (cheap) player

I'm after a cheap(ish) highly-compatible DivX/DVD player. It needs to be reasonably priced, preferably under £100, as I need to buy two of them (one for the lounge, one for the main bedroom).

It will need to play normal DVD's, DVD-R's, +R's, RW's, etc. MP3 would be a bonus but not essential. A HDD is not essential.

It will also need to play CD's and DVD's with DivX movies on them. One question though. If I have a file on my hard disk called abc.avi (DivX movie), how do I burn that onto a CD/DVD? Do I just copy it as a data file or is there a format for DivX movies on CD/DVD? If so, what software would I need as Nero doesn't seem to offer a DivX burning capability.

Well i've got a kiss DP-1000 at the moment - which has taken all sorts of (legally aquired of course!) DivX type films without problems...

With mine - I simply dump the file on the disk, and it recognises it as a video file. No special burning format required.

Please use This link for any support queries.. Thank you.

Thanks for the reply, DavidM. For DivX do I need to write the file to a CD-R or DVD-R? Or doesn't it matter?

The reason I ask is that some of my (legally acquired course!) DivX movies are more than 700MB in file size so they will not fit onto my CD-R's which are 700MB ones.

I really, really hope Scan put up some DivX/DVD players in Today only in the next few days as I need to order two! Hint, hint...

I got a £30/£35 Cello player from Sainsburys, i think the Medion player that Aldi were doing is more or less the same player. The only thing i find is that you need to run a proggy called mpeg4 modifier that checks for a 'packed' bitstream on the DivX files...if you play them packed they will stutter...

    *EDIT*
That'll teach me to go to bed and leave a reply that needs posting. Er indoors beat me to it!.

Okay, what about putting several DivX movies onto a single DVD - can these players play them? I suppose what i'm really after is for the player to show me the filenames in an Explorer style view and for me to select a movie to play.

I believe mine will read from DVDs.

You get a file browser to see what you want to play on mine.

Yeah same, it just brings up a list of the file names. Even read the subtitle file I needed for one too!

I finally ordered the Nortek one from Scan (£41.00). The free next day delivery is just too good an offer to pass by! It was hard to find supplies of some of the other ones mentioned and I really wanted one this week.

The Kiss DP-1000 was out of stock. The Pioneer was hard to find from a reputable supplier, plus it's now £120 from Richer Sounds. I couldn't pop down to Sainsburys as i'm working away from home with no Sainsburys for hundreds of miles! That basically just left the Nortek from the recommendations and Scan had stock.

If it performs well i'll buy another one. Thanks for all the suggestions. I guess i'll need to download some software to unpack and DivX movies that use packed bitstreams.

I've got a Toshiba SD340E, plays anything. I can just lump a load of XVID or DIVX files onto a recordable DVD and when I put it in it just comes up with a file manager like a computer would to let me browse and select what to play.

I can vouch for the Yamada's. My mum has had 2 different ones over the last few years and both have worked perfectly. Her most recent one which is DivX compatible plays pretty much anything I throw at it.

CDs are fine just activate overburn (using you're using Ahead Nero Burning ROM) if the file size is within a size of 710MB. Otherwise use larger CDs such as 90 minutes (800MB) or 99 minutes (900MB???)

Which reminds me, I need some too.

    Woohoo now Assistant Manager!
