idd i wouldsay go for a decent brand, but this doesnt always mean better sometimes you are paying for the brand... a sony laptop and a another brand laptop might have exactly the same config but massively diff price...

Cant argue with a 1000:1 contrast ratio though... very decent.
But yeah I agree with most...would rather go for a brand I know, and a respected brand at that.

Normally I'd agree (and soz for going OT folks) but one of the best 32" HD LCDs you can get was manufactured by the same company and was used by Marantz who charged £1300 for it and also a couple of no namers who charged £500 for exactly the same screen. Don't ask me what the no namers were but I'm sure it was a TV Microdirect were selling. At one point Sony were selling some of the worst flat screen TVs ever yet still charged a premium. It pays to do your research no matter what brand you buy in other words.

An Atlantean Triumvirate is now available in various eBook formats.

same *panel* but a lot of the quality of an lcd is in the electronics that drive it

Should've been clearer. Same TV full stop. Same panel, same electronics, same everything apart from the badge.

The contrast ratio is farily meaningless. It can be usful within a range from one manufacturer, that's about it. Unless they tell you how the figure is arrived at, you can't compare between panels.

You won't get anywhere near 1000:1 in a normal situation, 100:1 if you are lucky. The best way is simply to take a look at the display you are considering if possible. Otherwise you just have to rely on reviews.
