    MP3 Players and Airports

I know this may be a silly question to some of you, but I'm going on holiday on Friday and I was wondering if it's safe to put your mp3 player in your bag while it is being scanned? (It's a hard drive one) Thanks

my dad has had his laptop x-rayed several hundred times, perhaps even into the thousands, with no ill effects

I've heard the radiation up at 35,000ft is worse but that could be a myth.

I have had laptops go through with no problems. In Chicago O'Hare they require a laptop to be placed in a tray independantly of your bag while going through the scanner.

only for take off and landing - when they switch off the seatbelts light you are fine.

I used both my laptop and my HDD based Zen Micro on flights to Amsterdam and Memphis recently without an issue...

If these things really did have an effect on aircraft navigation or controls during the time the seatbelt sign is on, there is no way they would let you take them on!

You could never rely on anybody to make sure all there electrical equipment is off! You hear mobiles going off on landing etc all the time.

A stewardess on a flight told us that phones aren't really a problem. I suppose one way of looking at turning personal audio off on approach or taxi is so you can be better aware of any safety announcements.
If someone does impose a rule, why do people ignore it? How often are people up and in the overhead bins before the belt light is out, or on the phone on finals? Some people are nervous about flying and don't need the extra hassle of phones beeping and people pushing.
I was on one flight where a passenger was fishing out his laptop from overhead and was told by the steward three times to sit down and fasten his belt. It was seconds after takeoff and we'd just been struck by lightning Bloke just ignored him and was presented with a disruptive passenger notice explaining BA would refuse to carry him again.

If you have it in your pockets u have to put it into a little tray, when u go through a metal detector.

As for on the plane, i listened to mine while on was on the plane for the whole flight there and back for 3 hours, and the plane didnt crash or anything.

I bet all this talk about electrical devices and mobile phones disrupting the plane's navigational systems and what not was probably a lab joke gone out of hand, because the rumour that using a mobile phone in a petrol station potentially causing an explosion has been proven to be unfounded

So just scare mongering on the part of the people that want to scare people who are a little scared of flying, just like how my brother who is a fully qualified airline pilot used to say the wings on a plane shouldn't bend when taking off and landing when I was younger (they bend slightly, not hugely noticeable).
