HD - Do we need it?

Was watching Sky Digital today thinking 'great picture' now why do we 'need' High Definition as a friend of mine who has SKY-HD says hes not that impressed at spending £300 for the box plus more money a month. Are we really that needy for a few extra pixels?

    Agreed.

I was watching that advert for Sky HD and thought....if the depth of field and colour look that great on this - why would I want HD?

They should just label it 'TV Finest' like Tesco bacon, bread etc. Which means "buy this it makes you feel a cut above the tatooed, baldy, bright pink, footy shirt wearin' bog wump that you saw on the way in here'.

I think the truth is it is just something else to sell us. My 32ZP... Toshiba is doing the job fine. Sure it's a CRT, but the cabinet keeps the 2 year old toddler guessing. All I want to get for our next house is a good flat screen.

For the record, I buy finest ham...cuz it don't make ya fart like a old fat labrador.

why not? we can't keep living in the past. at least we are getting better products for our money. it's like saying do we need a mobile phone with a camera? why do we need a ps2, when our ps1 does the same thing? as techolgy gets better the demand for it gets more and more. im sure you would want something better this time for your money rather then the same low res crt screen you borught before?

    HD I Love it

I run a Sony 40" HD Ready LCD and just loved the world cup on the beeb, I would pay my licence fee just for HD alone. When I used to watch the Spanish football on sky, the wide shots were terrible, the players looked like they were made from blocks but if the world cup in HD was anything to go by then I cant wait untill the Spanish and English seasons kick off. Its all about quality not quantity , we need to rid the airwaves of most of the awful rubbish that passes as TV and pump upthe picture quality.

Maybe I need to get out more and work off some of this flab.

It's the next logical step if you ask me. If there is room for improvement why not take it?

Because it costs an absolute packet to buy HD TVs, HD cables and HD content is hardly existent unless you want to sign your name in blood for Mr Murdock (I have no cable here). My mates X360 is nice, but its not like I haven't seen a 1280x768 shooter before.

The thing is - it cost lot and lots when TV's and especially widescreen tellys came out but people still brought them.

Of course its gonna be expensive for the first year but after that the price will fall. Don't forget were about 8 years behind the US on this technology.

The main problem with the UK is that are SD analogue TV isn't bad, NTSC is horrific so it was an easy deal to make like VHS to DVD and Tape to CD. The problem we have is that DVD and DVB is perfectly acceptable to most people. Until HD hits critical mass and price it will for a large proportion of the country go in the box marked SACD and DVD-A. I hope I didn't make it sound like I don't want HD, just at the moment its only the saved TV space that really appeals not HD content.

    Exactly my point Gunbuster

In answer to 'why not' - the cost, not that great a difference, prog scan from source or conversion is great for DVD. I also make use of component and the cables cost me for that - and the difference is clear on my Toshiba.

My issue is that it is just another 'improvement' - essentially something to sell us...so we feel nice and cosy with the world...until the next improvement.

    PS.

I want a flat screen to save space as Gunbuster says. The only problem I have is that my wife says I can have a 42 inch plasma when I buy her a detached house...

We certainly don't need HD TV, but some of us certainly want it.

It's the same with all new technologies, nobody really needs them at the time, but some people certainly want them.

once watching enough content on HD you'll never want to go back! its like going from VHS->DVD well worth it!

watch a few movies or footy matches in HD and you'll wonder how you thought dvd was so good!
