World's largest plasma available to order from Panasonic at £50K, plus installation

Panasonic UK is now taking orders for what it describes as being the key product across the whole Matsush1ta Corporation - a 103in giant plasma screen (the world's biggest) - and one of these 1080p/full high-definition big boys is all yours for just £50,000.

Well, a bit more, actually, because that price includes VAT but not the cost of a site survey or installation - both of which are mandatory when the screen is bought by consumers, rather than for professional use by hire companies or in airports, indoor sports arenas, colleges and other venues. And most are expected to end up being used for pro applications, instead of for "VIP home-cinema" use, as Panasonic quaintly describes the indulgences of the ultra-rich.

A question was put from the floor yesterday about the power consumption, and went something like this,

"Isn't it a disgrace in this day and age to have a product that consumes 1.5kW?"

Panasonic's reply was to the effect that the power consumption was less than that of a projector able to do what its 103-incher can do - in terms of screen size and use in an undarkened room.

The come back from the floor was, "How about drawing the curtains and saving some power?"

Is it just me, or is the picture quality in the photo of the big set just pretty lousy? You'd have thought they'd set it up right.

You're right about the 4,096 steps, of course (2 to the power 12) but the picture quality was okay - what you're seeing above and in the article (where there is a larger version) is a shot I took, handheld, on a cheapo digital stills camera.

However the only thing that counts is what the images are like on the 103in product that Panasonic sells, not a pre-production prototype such as we saw yesterday.

And, as I said in the piece, anyone with brains who's considering buying - whether for home or business use - needs to look at one running before making any decisions at all.

The picture will look terrible if you aren't feeding it decent high def source material. SD already starts to look flakey on my 50" Panny.

Plus the artical mentioned Ice Age 2 being played via BluRay.......I think to date all BD releases have been 25GB MPEG2 releases and as such have a noticable amount of artifacts.....

They should have fed it a VC-1 encoded HD-DVD disc instead
