    Which all-encompassing DVD player?

Is there a DVD player that can play most video types through my television?

I would need a player that can play normal DVDs, DivX, AVI, Xvid, WMV, RealMedia, Quicktime, etc. The source would be DVD's or a USB-connected hard drive (or files from a built-in hard drive). Does such a player exist?

I've currently got a cheap Nortek player that can play DVD, Xvid and DivX files but not any other types of video files. This presents a problem as I have to transcode WMV to DivX but that results in a loss of quality and lip-synch problems.

HD-DVD and other HD-types would be a bonus!

I hadn't thought of that! Who makes HTPC's? I'd rather buy one if the price is right rather than build it.

RealMedia and quick time will pose the biggest problem. With MCE i belive the hacking to make it play is illegal. As far as i know myth can't coupe either.

media PCs are becoming more popular but imo MS are too blame for not advertising them enough, even thou there is a price insentive for most OEMs as Media Center is cheaper than XP pro.

Myself i'd go for a pentium-m based jobbie as for me the media pc needs to be silent as possible.
