Re: My PS3 can't play AVI files...please help!!!

Isn't is easier to stream the media using PMS or Serviio? I never tried to play media directly from USB drive and not sure I want to... Way too limited to what the device can play natively.

    Mattitude,

now we are getting somehwere. to answer your question Yes there are more than one Fat32 partition on my hard drive.

but how come only MP3 files can be seen even if i go to MUSIC, PHOTO OR VIDEO sections?

    still baffles me....

Re: My PS3 can't play AVI files...please help!!!

As I said, it could be that the PS3 is only able to detect one partition on a hard drive at a time, and that as a result, the only partition that it recognises is the music one.

What the PS3 expects is to look on the hard drive and see folders with those names to then be able to act accordingly, not multiple partitions with those names.

you see.. that is the problem

I'll say it again though, in bigger letters

MAX formatted size is about 32 gig.

your external drive is formatted too large.

by over 10 times. it is too large.

I understand you not wanting to kill your current external hard drive..so why not just get a cheaper one.. or just to TEST this whole thing, format a USB pen drive ... to FAT 32... max size 32gig.. and see.

Re: My PS3 can't play AVI files...please help!!!

So, my only choice(s) would be to re-partition my hard drive to 32GB only and stick a few movies there?

    or

like you said buy a pendrive or a portable hard drive and partition it to the "limit" of what the PS3 can see?

Or stream over the network like some others have suggested before.

Re: My PS3 can't play AVI files...please help!!!

But my MUSIC folder on my portable hard drive is over 40GB. then why is that the PS3 can detect it and why only it "at the same time"?

Only formatting via built-in Windows tools limits it to 32GB (according to the FAQ mentioned below), but that there are freeware tools to format drives larger than that to FAT32 (obviously this is at your own risk, and would mean a loss of data on the affected drive).

According to this PS3 HDD FAQ, it can only detect a single partition on a single drive, so I would assume that it the software simply isn't written to look for more than one at a time.
