Which floorstanders?

Hi guys I currently have acoustic energy evo floor standers (part of 5.1 set).

However I am going to change my floor standers and then the rest over the next year.

Now I have about £600-650 to spend and what to know which floorstanders to get?

Also whatever floorstanders I get I will be adding the other speakers too which I assume will need to be from the same brand.

So what to get? Any ideas?

Do you use them for music much? If you're going 5.1 and use that primarily then floor standers are overkill especially with a receiver since you'll probably be using the bass management system. That sort of budget on stand mounts would give you a far better sound than floor standers which will simply give you more bottom end.

I play a lot of music mate, in fact they are used most for this. They will be attached to my Yamaha amp.

I do use the 5.1 for games and movie's though.

Im jealous as usual.... Keep the EVOs !! Or upgrade to the EVO 3s - I still miss mine.

I guess I just want the best I can get for my money and then I'll buy the rest of the setup around this purchase.

I've seen some nice speakers from Dali and also Monitor Audio.

650 quid will get you some great speakers.


Might even get some B&W 805 for that (without stands). Something nice form dynaudio etc.

Buy 2nd hand.

Monitor Audio Bronze BX6's or AE Neo 4's would be my first choices at you £650 price point (with a yamaha amp) - what are you planning to do / upgrade the rest of the system to?

Its hard buying second hand as most offer collection only rather than delivery. Where would you recommend buying second hand from?

Just wait around and something will turn up! Just do 50-100 mile range of where you live.

If nobody bought speakers new then people like you wouldnt be able to buy them 2nd hand... and why do people sell them in the first place - because they want NEW ones.

Idiocy aside, yes I agree used speakers can offer great value for money and its worth looking around before you buy - HOWEVER, as the op said what he currently has (which is pretty good) and the fact he said he'd be looking to do the rest of his 5.1 set later, led me to believe he might want to get something new with the possibility of getting matching later down the line... WHICH he confirmed above.

It'd be a nightmare trying to buy used speakers to match over the period of the year, unless you get very very lucky.

Just if you put the effort in you should get much more for your money.

Take for example I bought a set of B&W 805s with stands for not much more than he is willing to spend.

Why pay 650 for some 650 quid speakers when you can pay 700-800 for a 2k set.

True, but his chances of finding someone selling the matching speakers later down the line - remembering that they most probably wouldnt break a matching full set, and he'll already have the fronts - will make his life a nightmare!

As a single complete purchase, brilliant - as a set bought in bits over time as money allows (to match) not so much...

If she stick to the big manufacturers matching shouldn't really be an issue long term.

If anything finding matching cheaper speakers tends to be harder as more end up in land fill. Top end kit lives on for decades.

Not sure what they sound like, but I saw some in the flesh at lunchtime, and they're gorgeous. Be aware that the price mentioned is each, not the pair...

They do a smaller version, the ES80, and larger set, the ES100...

So currently I have these two offers

new b&w 685 in black ash for £330 delivered (i know they aren't floorstanders but they could do as rears and ill get fronts in summer)

or

Monitor Audio RX6 speakers in mint condition (7 months old) for about £590 delivered.

Which one is best deal?
